There is
absolutely no doubt that the
E670 is a world leading amp -
but at the cost of it - it
should be. It does not really
matter what guitar you play, or
style, this amp will have the
sound in it that you are looking
for. It has every bell and whistle you can imagine (visit www.englamps.co.uk to see more about the E670) and even some you cannot imagine. The amp was developed by Horst Langer who has been with Engl from the start and he is in fact an awesome engineer/designer. There are all of the effects loops you would ever need, the amp can be very well controlled from midi (I use a ground control for that and it works perfectly) and you can even store channels with different settings for each midi channel right on the amp. There are many options and buttons on the front of this amp for pure tone mastery - and make no mistake - this amp is probably up there with the best there is in both quality, design and features coupled with some of the best sounds in the world across the board. This amp WILL absolutely do all styles of music. There is external Bias controls which are easy to use and the amp can have EL34 or 6L6 tubes installed. The amp IS switchable for different countries regarding mains input.
There are no
vinyl options on this amp from
the Manufacturer - period - so
if you want a good looking
'different' feel for your amp...
tough.
Overall I felt
that the Engl E670 has at least
the same build quality (if not
better) and offered far more
things a real musician can use
every day. So in this particular shootout, I chose the E670 as the winner (but like I said on this site many times - there are NO losers). |
The Nitro packs a
punch - of that there is no
doubt in my mind. This amp was
developed for the guitarist that
needed that extra drive and more
importantly that bottom end that
this amp just loves to deliver. Each and every one of these amps is custom made for the user by Splawn based in Dallas, North Carolina, USA and there is a waiting list - always a good sign of a hot product. The one on this site was bought towards the end of 2008 and was delivered a few months later in awesome condition which oozed quality right out of the box. There were absolutely no issues whatsoever with this amps pedigree and build quality. The options when buying enable you to buy an amp customised for you and a unique product. Fortunately, most guitarists have never heard of Splawn amps - and that's a good thing if you are in the market - firstly because the wait time is kept reasonable (and quality will matter at production) but secondly that you will be buying one of the worlds premier manufactured and designed products for what is really an awesome price and extremely hard to beat.

The main
advantage of this amp over the
Splawn Nitro in fact is the
flexibility to almost achieve
any style. Sure there will be
some sounds you cannot get from
the Engl E670, but they are
really far and few between -
linked with the amazing
flexibility of this amp there
really is no contest. You CAN
achieve at least as good a tone
with this monster as you can
with the Nitro. But remember -
it is typically twice the
price...... |
The Nitro IS a really cool product. But compared to the E670 the shortcomings are immediately obvious - little amp control, no extended channels (in fact there are at least 6 on the Engl if you are clever enough to figure them out), just one effects loop with no volume control and a host of other things simply too many to list. But of course - the Nitro IS a custom amp - the Engl is not - overall the Engl wins this one... |
